Thankfully, this vampire-fueled dystopic romp was worth all the excuses that I spewed at the clerk at the counter perused my choices… speaking of which… why can’t those fucks just check the shit out and shut the fuck up? You work at a Blockbuster. You think I give a fuck what you thought of Blindness. You click buttons and alphabetize things!

All have shaded boxes with definitions of key terms and resource lists, and many have color illustrations. An alphabetical list of all articles appears at the beginning of each volume. The lack of see references in this list and in the text is a minor inconvenience. There is a glossary at the end of volume 2. The reading level is fairly high, so public and consumer health collections will also need resources at a lower literacy level. There is some duplication and overlap with other Gale medical encyclopedias. The article Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is identical to that in The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (1999). Some material from The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders (2002) appears here because of the role of neurotransmitters in mental illness. Since many genetic diseases affect the nervous system, there is some overlap with The Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders (2001) also. The article on Canavan disease is almost identical. Nevertheless, most public and consumer health libraries will want The Gale Encyclopedia of Neurological Disorders because of its focus on complex conditions that are not well covered in other lay medical encyclopedias. They appear in alphabetical order, and each concludes with see also references as well as suggestions for further reading, including Web sites.

The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research facilities, terms, and concepts of both these fields. There are brief biographies of the well known (Salk, Jonas) and the lesser known but important (Mil stein, Cesar); and explanations of common terms (Epidemics and pandemics), uncommon terms (Retroposons and transposable elements), and acronyms like AIDS and SCID (Severe combined immunodeficiency). The entries are in alphabetical order with many cross references. Though there are no bibliographies with the entries, there are 13 pages of book and journal-article citations and 10 pages of Web addresses in the "Sources Consulted" section. This is followed by an 18-page "Historical Chronology" of milestones in human scientific achievement, showing how ancient (circa 10,000 B.C.E.) ideas eventually led to germ theory and the burgeoning of microbiology and immunology through 2002. The extensive, detailed general index indicates the main entries' volume and page numbers in boldface type. Sometimes the same page information is repeated in regular type, an unnecessary redundancy. Using the index one can find that the Irish potato famine is mentioned in the entry on Fungal genetics along with other similarly embedded bits of information. One important, but missing, finding aid is an index to the biographies, as browsing biographies is often a way to interest students in a discipline.

Other special features include a comprehensive glossary, a chromosome map, a guide to symbols for pedigree charts, and an organizations directory all features that should make understanding difficult genetics concepts much easier.
