Building Blocks of Matter: A Supplement to the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Physics Publisher: Gacl | ISBN: 0028657039 | edition 2003 | PDF | 547 pages | 10,91 mb Twentieth-century and twenty-first-century elementary particle physics is full of quarks, leptons, antimatter, and dark energy. How is a reader supposed to understand physics when much of what he or she may, or may not, remember from high-school physics is no longer current? This alphabetically arranged guide is intended for a broad audience, including advanced high-school and college students as well as general readers. An international team of physicists contributed 153 entries, each with a bibliography of recommended books, journals, and Web sites. See also references appear at the end of each article. Also included are a reader's guide presenting a topical arrangement of entries, a time line, a glossary, and a list of common abbreviations and acronyms. Case studies of experiments such as the measurement of the muon, profiles of important laboratories such as Fermilab, and biographies of physicists such as Paul Dirac are among the entries, which are illustrated with tables, photograph, and schematics. Building Blocks of Matter is a supplement to the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Physics (1996). As such, it will help students understand the physics of elementary particles, that is, particles that cannot be broken down. Because of its focus, it is more specialized than a physics dictionary. Recommended for science reference collections in academic and public libraries, especially those that own the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Physics

Encyclopedia of Science and Religion (MacMillan Reference USA) Publisher: MacMillan | ISBN: 0028657047 | edition 2003 | PDF | 1073 pages | 11,84 mb This encyclopedia, intended for "a wide readership from high-school students to independent researchers and academics," deals with all aspects of the conflict and dialogue between science and religion. The list of scholars who have contributed is impressive, and the project had as a consultant and contributor Ian Barbour, physicist, theologian, and well-known author on the interplay of science and religion. The editorial point of view is that the formal consideration of the relationship between science and religion has become a new academic field of study. The troublesome potential of new technologies has brought questions into the public arena as well.

Dietary trends within various cultures are also covered, ranging from the consumption habits of Asian-Americans to those of Central Europe to those customary of Pacific Islanders. The set is rich in biographies of influential figures in the fields of nutrition and medicine such as McDonald's founder Ray Kroc; Sylvester Graham, the creator of the now-famous Graham cracker; and William Stark, a pioneer in early research into balanced diets. Profiles of major organizations such as UNICEF, the National Academy of Sciences and the World Health Organization complete this world guide to health and nutrition.

34 Days: Israel, Hezbollah, and the War in LebanonThe border abduction of two Israeli soldiers on the morning of July 12, 2006, set in motion what would eventually become known as the Second Lebanon War. After 34 days and more than 5,000 casualties--including those injured--a ceasefire was signed, and the geopolitics of the region were changed immeasurably. A #1 bestseller in Israel for months, 34 Days brilliantly reconstructs the progression of the war, from the soldiers' abduction through the hasty Israeli decision for an agressive response; the fateful discussions within the Cabinet and among senior Israeli command; and the heavy fighting in south Lebanon. It also delves into the raging diplomatic battles that took place in Paris, Washington, and New York, which would eventually end the war.

#12 :: Strawberry Days: How Internment Destroyed a Japanese American Commun |
E-Books & Tutorials |
| Publisher: jobko :: 14 February 2009 :: view: 136 |
Palgrave Macmillan | 2005 | ISBN: 140396792X | Pages: 288 | PDF | 1.44 MB The poignant story of a Japanese American community torn apart by racism and WWII internment Strawberry Days tells the vivid and moving tale of the creation and destruction of a Japanese immigrant community. Before World War II, Bellevue, the now-booming 'edge city' on the outskirts of Seattle, was a prosperous farm town renowned for its strawberries. Many of its farmers were recent Japanese immigrants who, despite being rejected by white society, were able to make a living cultivating the rich soil. Yet the lives they created for themselves through years of hard work vanished almost instantly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. David Neiwert combines compelling storytelling with firsthand interviews and newly uncovered documents to weave together the history of this community and the racist schemes that prevented the immigrants from reclaiming their land after the war. Ultimately, Strawberry Daysrepresents more than one community's story, reminding us that bigotry's roots are deeply ingrained in the very fiber of American society.
