hat's the basic plot of Doug Liman's alternately dry and ridiculous new action thriller Jumper, and the film takes great pains to NOT introduce anything that might distract from that one paltry premise: One really uninteresting guy can teleport wherever he wants (including bank vaults, beaches, and the head of the Egyptian Sphinx) -- up until the day that a ferocious (but also ridiculous) villain shows up to ruin all the teleport-y fun. And then we get a half-decent chase, a bunch of hyper-kinetically edited action, and a sequel teaser. For a 90-minute flick that focuses on a guy who moves real quick, it sure doesn't move all that slick.

It’s Christmas Eve. The Pierce family try having a quiet dinner in their LA apartment. Further down the hall, a party brews between friends. Amid tremors and power outages, Kyle (Tyler Armstrong), son of Elizabeth (Barbara Streifel Sanders) and Daniel Pierce (Joseph Dunn), and his younger sister, Ashley (Abigail Droeger), go missing, and when the partygoers are attacked and one is killed by something from the darkness, two nights of fun and excitement become one fight for survival. Darkness is a tried-and-true method of building tension. If you want people to wonder what’s lurking in that corner over there, turn the lights off.

The well choreographed bad guys are “The Axe Gang”, and they’ve just finished killing off their gangland competition. Enter Sing (Stephen Chow), a wannabe gangster and two bit crook. In the poor neighborhood of “Pig Sty Alley” he attempts to con a barber out of some cash. He botches everything and suddenly the whole Axe Gang is declaring war on the residents of “Pig Sty”, with the mewling, prat-fall prone Sing stuck somewhere around the edges.
