How do you transform a very funny book into a dreadfully boring movie? I laughed more from reading the first five pages of Larry Doyle's novel than I did during the entirety of Chris Columbus' film version of I Love You, Beth Cooper, despite the fact that Doyle wrote the screenplay. Much of the dialogue is lifted directly from the book, but when spoken on screen, the lines fall painfully flat. That leaves the attempts at physical humor, which are constant, and will tickle to death only those who love to see pratfalls: "Look, Mommy, man fall down and cry out in agony! Ha, ha!"

Am I crazy or is Elizabeth Banks the new hot commodity in Hollywood? From where I sit, it seems as if she’s starring in nearly every movie made! Usually, however, she can be seen in some form of a comedy. Not in the The Uninvited. She sets aside the granny panties she made famous in Zack and Miri Make a Porno to star in what might be her first run at a psychological thriller.

Maybe that statement is a bit harsh — she very well may be good in a better movie. The Uninvited is one of those movies that simply tries too hard to be scary and tricky for its own good. Which, of course, should come as no surprise, seeing as Hollywood tends to make a complete mess of their Asian horror remakes (this is ripped from the Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters).

In recent weeks, I ran out of shit to watch… which led to me actually renting Steven Seagal movies at my local video store. As I stood there, holding Against the Dark and Driven to Kill in my hands, I began to flush with embarrassment… and then I became mad, because there was once a time when you could stand in a video store line with a Seagal movie in your hand and not have everyone think that you’re a fucking moron… yeah, they might think you have bad tastes, but it didn’t mean you were a moron. Thankfully, this vampire-fueled dystopic romp was worth all the excuses that I spewed at the clerk at the counter perused my choices… speaking of which… why can’t those fucks just check the shit out and shut the fuck up? You work at a Blockbuster. You think I give a fuck what you thought of Blindness. You click buttons and alphabetize things!

Unless you're a really experienced professional, you'll be able to study the examples in this book and learn a lot.
