Operator Algebras and Quantum Statistical Mechanics 1

Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540170936 | edition 2003 | PDF | 520 pages | 37,1 mb

This is the first of two volumes presenting the theory of operator algebras with applications to quantum statistical mechanics. The authors' approach to the operator theory is to a large extent governed by the dictates of the physical applications. The book is self-contained and most proofs are presented in detail, which makes it a useful text for students with a knowledge of basic functional analysis. The introductory chapter surveys the history and justification of algebraic techniques in statistical physics and outlines the applications that have been made.

The second edition contains new and improved results. The principal changes include: A more comprehensive discussion of dissipative operators and analytic elements; the positive resolution of the question of whether maximal orthogonal probability measure on the state space of C-algebra were automatically maximal along all the probability measures on the space.

Electromagnetic Theory and Computation: A Topological Approach (Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Publications)
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521801605 | edition 2004 | PDF | 288 pages | 12,16 mb

This book explores the connection between algebraic structures in topology and computational methods for 3-dimensional electric and magnetic field computation. Although known since the 19th century, there has been little exposition of the connection's relevance to computational methods in modern topological language. This book closes the gap and will be of interest to researchers working in finite element methods for electromagnetic computation and those who have an interest in numerical and industrial applications of algebraic topology.

Mathematics for Game Developers (Game Development)
Publisher: Course Technology PTR | ISBN: 159200038X | edition 2004 | PDF | 649 pages | 14,81 mb

Mathematics for Game Developers is just that—a math book designed specifically for the game developer, not the mathematician. As a game developer, you know that math is a fundamental part of your programming arsenal. In order to program a game that goes beyond the basics, you must first master concepts such as matrices and vectors. In this book, you will find some unique solutions for dealing with real problems you’ll face when programming many types of 3D games. Not only will you learn how to solve these problems, you’ll also learn why the solution works, enabling you to apply that solution to other problems. You’ll also learn how to leverage software to help solve algebraic equations. Through numerous examples, this book clarifies how mathematical ideas fit together and how they apply to game programming.

Cyclotomic Fields (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
Cyclotomic Fields (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387903070 | edition 1978 | DJVU | 253 pages | 2,49 mb

Foreword
Kummer's work on cyclotomic fields paved the way for the development of algebraic number theory in general by Dedekind, Weber, Hensel, Hilbert, Takagi, Artin and others. However, the success of this general theory has tended to obscure special facts proved by Kummer about cyclotomic fields which lie deeper than the general theory. For a long period in the 20th century this aspect of Kummer's work seems to have been largely forgotten, except for a few papers, among which are those by Pollaczek [Po], Artin-Hasse [A-H] and Vandiver [Va].
In the mid 1950's, the theory of cyclotomic fields was taken up again by Iwasawa and Leopoldt. Iwasawa viewed cyclotomic fields as being analogues for number fields of the constant field extensions of algebraic geometry, and wrote a great sequence of papers investigating towers of cyclotomic fields, and more generally, Galois extensions of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. Leopoldt concentrated on a fixed cyclotomic field, and established various p-adic analogues of the classical complex analytic class number formulas. In particular, this led him to introduce, with Kubota, p-adic analogues of the complex L-functions attached to cyclotomic extensions of the rationals. Finally, in the late 1960's, Iwasawa made the fundamental discovery that there was a close connection between his work on towers of cyclotomic fields and these p-adic L-functions of Leopoldt-Kubota.

Elements of the Representation Theory of Associative Algebras
Elements of the Representation Theory of Associative Algebras
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521586313 | edition 2006 | PDF | 469 pages | 3,6 mb

This first part of a two-volume set offers a modern account of the representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras over an algebraically closed field. The authors present this topic from the perspective of linear representations of finite-oriented graphs (quivers) and homological algebra. The self-contained treatment constitutes an elementary, up-to-date introduction to the subject using, on the one hand, quiver-theoretical techniques and, on the other, tilting theory and integral quadratic forms. Key features include many illustrative examples, plus a large number of end-of-chapter exercises. The detailed proofs make this work suitable both for courses and seminars, and for self-study. The volume will be of great interest to graduate students beginning research in the representation theory of algebras and to mathematicians from other fields.

In the 17th century, the great scientist and mathematician Galileo Galilei noted that the book of nature "cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and read the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures, without which it is not humanly possible to understand a single word of it."

Saunders Mac Lane - Categories for the Working Mathematician
Springer | 1998 | ISBN: 0387984038 | Pages: 314 | DJVU | 2.71 MB
Categories for the Working Mathematician provides an array of general ideas useful in a wide variety of fields. Starting from the foundations, this book illuminates the concepts of category, functor, natural transformation, and duality. The book then turns to adjoint functors, which provide a description of universal constructions, an analysis of the representations of functors by sets of morphisms, and a means of manipulating direct and inverse limits. These categorical concepts are extensively illustrated in the remaining chapters, which include many applications of the basic existence theorem for adjoint functors. The categories of algebraic systems are constructed from certain adjoint-like data and characterized by Beck's theorem. After considering a variety of applications, the book continues with the construction and exploitation of Kan extensions. This second edition includes a number of revisions and additions, including two new chapters on topics of active interest. One is on symmetric monoidal categ
ories and braided monoidal categories and the coherence theorems for them. The second describes 2-categories and the higher dimensional categories which have recently come into prominence.
