This textbook provides an introduction to dynamic modeling in cell biology, emphasizing computational approaches based on realistic molecular mechanisms. It is designed to introduce cell biology and neuroscience students to computational modeling, and applied mathematics students, theoretical biologists, and engineers to many of the problems in dynamical cell biology. This volume was conceived of and begun by Professor Joel Keizer based on his many years of teaching and research together with his colleagues. The project was expanded and finished by his students and friends after his untimely death in 1999.

In 1996, British doctors were horrified to discover that mad cow disease (BSE), an affliction that had been plaguing British cattle for ten years, had jumped the species barrier and was appearing in humans as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). Not unlike the mad cows, victims of vCJD suffer from a degenerative neurological disease that peppers the brain with microscopic holes, causing dementia, loss of motor control, and certain death. What alarms researchers and public health officials worldwide is that the incubation period for vCJD may be as long as 10 or even 15 years, and during this period those infected are symptom-free. And because the disease is so far undetectable except by autopsy, there is no way of knowing with certainty how many people have already been infected. In fact, even travelers who spent time in the U.K. from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s are still considered to be at some risk. What's more, although the U.S. has not detected any mad cows within its borders, there are plenty of "mad deer" running free in several states, and the disease afflicting them is a BSE-type neurological disorder. Called chronic wasting disease (CWD), the illness in these deer has yet to be linked with any human deaths. But given BSE's ability to jump species, there are no guarantees.

How do you transform a very funny book into a dreadfully boring movie? I laughed more from reading the first five pages of Larry Doyle's novel than I did during the entirety of Chris Columbus' film version of I Love You, Beth Cooper, despite the fact that Doyle wrote the screenplay. Much of the dialogue is lifted directly from the book, but when spoken on screen, the lines fall painfully flat. That leaves the attempts at physical humor, which are constant, and will tickle to death only those who love to see pratfalls: "Look, Mommy, man fall down and cry out in agony! Ha, ha!"

Am I crazy or is Elizabeth Banks the new hot commodity in Hollywood? From where I sit, it seems as if she’s starring in nearly every movie made! Usually, however, she can be seen in some form of a comedy. Not in the The Uninvited. She sets aside the granny panties she made famous in Zack and Miri Make a Porno to star in what might be her first run at a psychological thriller.

Maybe that statement is a bit harsh — she very well may be good in a better movie. The Uninvited is one of those movies that simply tries too hard to be scary and tricky for its own good. Which, of course, should come as no surprise, seeing as Hollywood tends to make a complete mess of their Asian horror remakes (this is ripped from the Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters).
