It’s pretty, it’s colourful, but it has one-dimensional characters and an unsatisfying storyline: think early Hugh Grant meets Chairman Kaga.

When the villains of Kung Fu Hustle introduce themselves with a swishy line dance, you know you’re in for something special. No it’s not the latest Baz Luhrman musical; it’s the new Hong Kong film from actor/writer/director Stephen Chow.

The well choreographed bad guys are “The Axe Gang”, and they’ve just finished killing off their gangland competition. They call the city’s ineffective cops out of hiding to pick up the bodies, and go back to celebrating. It’s 1940’s Shanghai and they have the run of the town. Enter Sing (Stephen Chow), a wannabe gangster and two bit crook. In the poor neighborhood of “Pig Sty Alley” he attempts to con a barber out of some cash. He botches everything and suddenly the whole Axe Gang is declaring war on the residents of “Pig Sty”, with the mewling, prat-fall prone Sing stuck somewhere around the edges.

It is the year 2046 where robots are created to serve man. De Ming (Alex Fong) is the first generation of AI android invented to protect the police workforce. “Flash Point” is a Donnie Yen action movie being sold as a cop/Triad film. Like most Donnie Yen action movies, the cops-and-robbers stuff is merely filler material until the Third Act, when Yen is allowed to do what he does best, and what Donnie Yen does best is whup ass like the Terminator on speed. So if Jun Ma doesn’t look or really act like a cop, that’s perfectly okay, because it’s a cop as played by Donnie Yen, which is the same as saying, “Just go along with it; the good stuff is coming.” And the “stuff” comes nearly 50 minutes into the 83-minute movie, courtesy of an overcooked turkey and a kid used as a volleyball by a scumbag. Don’t you just hate it when food and kids are used for evil purposes?

The Skinny: It's another Kung Fu [insert noun] film, and it's actually okay fun. Decent fighting, fun cooking, and Sammo Hung lift Kung Fu Chef beyond its meager expectations to become something of a surprise. Not quality but not really bad.
At first glance, Kung Fu Chef looks as cheesy and low-rent as 2007's unimpressive Kung Fu Fighter. The combo of director Yip Wing-Kin and stars Vanness Wu and Fan Siu-Wong couldn't prevent Kung Fu Fighter from being a crappy Kung Fu Hustle clone, and since they all return for Kung Fu Chef, it's understandable if confidence in this latest Kung Fu [insert noun] iteration is not high. But Kung Fu Chef surprises. Thanks to decent fight scenes, fun cooking scenes and the presence of the venerable Sammo Hung, the film surpasses its numerous negatives to deliver something approximating decent, harmless fun. Who knew?

t's cheap cinema deja vu. The My Way Films-produced martial arts movie Kung Fu Fighter looks enormously like Kung Fu Hustle, from the English title to the Chinese title font, to the costumes, sets, situations, and even the actors, many of whom were in Kung Fu Hustle, and some play similar roles here. Lam Chi-Chung is the portly sidekick, while Chan Kwok-Kwan is a suit-wearing, goatee-sporting gang boss. Tin Kai-Man was Chan Kwok-Kwan's lackey in Kung Fu Hustle, but here he's a gang boss. Leung Siu-Lung, the big bad from Kung Fu Hustle gets a role-reversal and plays a good guy this time. And lovely Lee Wai, who wasn't in Kung Fu Hustle, but appeared as the girl who slipped on a banana peel in Shaolin Soccer, shows up as a cheongsam-wearing bad girl. There's your Six Degrees of Stephen Chow update, which may constitute 25% of the audience's interest in Kung Fu Fighter....
