She sets aside the granny panties she made famous in Zack and Miri Make a Porno to star in what might be her first run at a psychological thriller.

Maybe that statement is a bit harsh — she very well may be good in a better movie. The Uninvited is one of those movies that simply tries too hard to be scary and tricky for its own good. Which, of course, should come as no surprise, seeing as Hollywood tends to make a complete mess of their Asian horror remakes (this is ripped from the Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters).

Sorry to break it to fans of the Saw film series, but Jigsaw, a/k/a John Kramer is a self-righteous dick. In comparison to the Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers of the horror world, whose raison d'être is causing carnage mercifully bereft of deeper moral or instructional value, Jigsaw devotes a ridiculous amount of time thinking about what other people do with themselves, and effectively (if ironically) conceives his traps as object lessons in humility, compassion, and self-awareness.

“Ink” is a dark, modern-day fairy tale in which our nighttime world is inhabited by two factions of unseen, supernatural beings. On the side of good are the Storytellers, pretty twentysomethings who come to us as we sleep and give us happy (though clichéd) dreams. On the dark side are the Succubi, men with creepy faces that are only seen as black and white images through panes of glass permanently bolted to their chests. As you might imagine, the Succubi are the ones responsible for our nightmares.

"I was born with seven clits. Well, seven that I know of." That's the opening line of Frank Henenlotter's sixth film and pretty much sets the tone. A sexually explicit camp comedy ride filled with choice cuts of dialogue and John Waters-style acting.

His first film since the early 1990s, "Bad Bilogy" is intelligent, funny and sick as hell -- but it isn't as freaky as his best film, "Brain Damage", and ultimately not as good as most of Henenlotter's other films. It feels a bit too much like a John Waters movie than a Henlotter film.

When the villains of Kung Fu Hustle introduce themselves with a swishy line dance, you know you’re in for something special. No it’s not the latest Baz Luhrman musical; it’s the new Hong Kong film from actor/writer/director Stephen Chow.

The well choreographed bad guys are “The Axe Gang”, and they’ve just finished killing off their gangland competition. They call the city’s ineffective cops out of hiding to pick up the bodies, and go back to celebrating. It’s 1940’s Shanghai and they have the run of the town. Enter Sing (Stephen Chow), a wannabe gangster and two bit crook. In the poor neighborhood of “Pig Sty Alley” he attempts to con a barber out of some cash. He botches everything and suddenly the whole Axe Gang is declaring war on the residents of “Pig Sty”, with the mewling, prat-fall prone Sing stuck somewhere around the edges.

Usually I'm pretty hard on films that borrow heavily from other sources, especially when the premise is almost identical to the work that inspired them. It's no secret that the 2006 After Dark Horrorfest selection Dark Ride bears more than a striking resemblance to Tobe Hooper's 1981 deformed slasher opus The Funhouse. According to the gilded rulebook I keep under my bed, that's a huge strike against any filmmaker, regardless of genre. After all, original ideas aren't that hard to come by, contrary to what countless struggling writers may tell you. All it takes is an active imagination and some talent.

Brad Pitt doesn't really act in Ocean's Thirteen, he just glides through the third chapter in Steven Soderbergh's heist-flick annuity on the magic carpet of his own unimpeachable cool. Don't knock it. Genuine star power is rare -- just watch Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Orlando Bloom struggle to attain it. Pitt has it in spades -- all aces.

Like Dean Martin did with Rat Pack capo Frank Sinatra in Ocean's Eleven back in the Pleistocene era (1960), Pitt, 43, damn near holds his own with George Clooney, 46, the current go-to icon for effortless charm. That they both rolled craps in 2004's Ocean's Twelve, the self-satisfied ringer in the series, seems to have taught a hard lesson: Do not overplay the arrogance card. While co-stars Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Al Pacino, as the scrappy villain of the piece, knock themselves out to add juice to the movie, Pitt, following Clooney's lead, never breaks a sweat. And yet we're grabbed, drawn in by something beyond looks.

It takes you back to the world we all lived in for four years. Here, high school is the epitome of identity and existence. Senior year must be lived with great melodrama and self-importance because after graduation, life becomes a gaping black hole of uncertainty.

So it is that four friends decide they cannot leave high school without having sex. ("We can't go to college virgins. They probably have special dorms for people like us.")

Kevin (Thomas Ian Nichols) and his girlfriend Vicky are at the bittersweet end of a high school romance. They obsess about the L-word and the Big O. Sex becomes an inevitable and strangely joyless rite of senior year.

Meanwhile, Oz — a romantically challenged lacrosse star — discovers his inner Backstreet Boy to win the love of a sweet girl who looks about 12.

Bottom Line: Ouch.
It's not easy being a comic book hero these days. The poor boys have taken their lumps in "Hancock," "The Dark Knight" and even "Iron Man." Self-doubt, angst and inadequacies plague them. And now comes "Watchmen." Its costumed superheroes, operating in an alternative 1985, are seriously screwed up -- and so is their movie. If anyone were able to make a nine-figure movie, something like "Watchmen" would have been the opening-night film at the Sundance Film Festival.

As stimulating as it was to see the superhero movie enter the realm of crime fiction in "The Dark Knight," "Watchmen" enters into a realm that is both nihilistic and campy. The two make odd companions. The film, directed by Zack Snyder ("300"), will test the limits of superhero movie fans. If you're not already invested in these characters because of the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, nothing this movie does is likely to change that predicament.

That's bad news for Warner Bros. and Paramount, which hold domestic and international rights, respectively. Opening weekends everywhere will reflect the huge anticipation of this much-touted, news-making movie. After that, the boxoffice slide could be drastic.

Snyder and writers David Hayter and Alex Tse never find a reason for those unfamiliar with the graphic novel to care about any of this nonsense. And it is nonsense. When one superhero has to take a Zen break, he does so on Mars. Of course he does.
